Wed 1529 On one of the sort of terraces at the hostel. Using voice typing I'm not saying anything terribly secret and there's no one obviously here and it's probably less annoying than the on-screen keyboard.
Didn't sleep great but not too bad. Probably woke up about seven-ish and drifted in and out of sleep. Probably got up about nine. I went and got the last little bit of coffee and sat down on the lower terrace- Honestly, there are so many terraces here at the hostel - and had a bit of a think. I managed to get signed up for telegram and although I couldn't see anything super helpful about the event in Acapulco, I did at least get on so that's progress.
I went over to Wombat, which is where one of the language exchanges seems to be. I stopped over and had some tacos at Royalty on the way. Wombat actually seemed quite nice. It was pretty empty. A bit of a co-working space as well. There was no one else there that wasn't staff as far as I could see, but it was quite nice. And I had a pretty decent latte for only 35 pesos. Anyway, I asked the woman at the counter and she said, yes, there is a language exchange and it's tomorrow and it starts at six. And she told me when it finished, although it was kind of busy thinking, ooh, tomorrow, I think it finishes about nine or ten. I was going to go to it if it was today. My gut feeling is So I'm not going to go to it tomorrow, which feeds into all the plans I've been kind of making in my head about where to go and what to do. So let me talk about that now.
I'm having a beer by the way, not that it's a big deal, but just I am.
Okay, so I thought the language exchange was Wednesday and I am booked in at this hostel for tonight and I toyed with extending this morning but I thought let's go and talk to Wombat and wander around a bit first. It's not like I have to rush.
I do actually quite like Oaxaca, but I've been here before. for whatever reason I'm just not feeling it somewhere to spend a lot of time right now or maybe use as a base for exploring. Maybe it's the slight rush for the end of the trip or Acapulco or the fact I've been here before, or I don't know, whatever it is. I kind of like the place, but I'm just not up for staying right now.
I have a look at the buses to Acapulco. In theory there are buses from here to Acapulco but it's confusing as hell. Acapulso also seems kind of scarily huge and probably costs a small fortune to get across by taxi and bus problems but I can't worry about that too much right now. Anyway, there are also buses as far as I can tell and I did go on to the Bus Company website which take about 8 hours from Puerto Escondido to Acapulco. Not sure it's the best road but I don't think it's too big a deal. I am kind of thinking anyway, long story short that I will book a hostel for let's say two nights after tonight in Puerto Escondido. I'll go there tomorrow during the day so you know I'll leave here at 11ish and get there early afternoon when I can And I'll check in. It'd probably be a dorm. I've seen a hostel which seems to be 100 metres or so from a beach you can swim in, not one of the surfy beaches. It may not be party, I don't know, but I should think it'd be interesting. And for better or worse, I've already had like one effectively private night. And as of now, there's no one else in the dorm, so maybe I'll get two private nights here. And it probably will be private accommodation when we're another in Acapulco.
And if I like it, I can extend and if I don't like it, I could maybe go to the small town somewhere outside Puerto Escondido that Corrine and Marion told me about, time permitting. I'm also kind of thinking that maybe I will go over to Acapulco tue or wed. The event starts Monday, but I'm not at the event. Maybe if I go over Tuesday or Wednesday, I'll know if Jim's going to be there. Jim will have his accommodation sorted out, which takes some pressure off. I can choose not to go at all, I won't be quite so rushed, you know, play it by ear but that's a possibility, I don't have to be there for the Monday. Or indeed this Saturday I think there's some sort of party this Saturday but anyway. I can even see what kind of activity there is on these telegram groups once the event proper has started and see if people are suggesting meeting up. I think some people are there already but you know that's neither here nor there. They're obviously more into it than I am or have different travel styles or different life commitments. Blah blah.
I wasn't going to go to Puerto Escondido but it would be good if I could swim. It's kind of on the way to Acapulco, given the difficulties of going from here. It's somewhere that does kind of appeal and especially the possibility of the side trip to this little town might be nice. It might be fun in Puerto Escondido. There's the serendipitous angle of Rosa telling me about it at Charlie's yesterday.
I could stay on the longer In Oaxaca, but I'm not really feeling it. I'm only booked in for two nights here. I kind of like this hostel in a way, but you know, it might be nice to be somewhere a bit more sociable. And I did only booked for two nights. And with Oaxaca also probably being a bit of a hub, I might naturally come back through here on the way back from acaPulco or something. I imagine if I'm actually in acaPulco, it's perhaps not so hard to go to a bus terminal or something and find out I might also go straight back from Acapalco to Puerto Escondido. We'll just worry about that later.
If I didn't already say I'm trying to think of Acapulco as actually not that big a deal, you know, it might be fun. If not, it's not actually that bad. I mean, I'm probably paying, it was very cheap at the last place, but I'm probably paying at least 200 pesos a night for a dorm bed most places. If I'm paying 500 to 600-ish a night, and I think I can get something towards the middle of that, in Acapulco, that's a private room, perhaps even a whole apartment, maybe with access to a swimming pool. So it's only 300-350-ish extra night for three or four nights. Yes, there's probably a few expensive meals out that in places I don't very much like if I'm meeting people and maybe some expensive taxis to and from the bus terminal. But it's not a super expensive place to go for three or four nights and I am at least getting a private and it's a different environment and I've been there and seen it and maybe I'll meet some cool people and have some interesting conversations that might even rate on the life changes scale. You just don't know and it's not like I had any massively concrete plans to go anywhere else.
The great thing about the voice typing is that sometimes you talk for two or three minutes and it just throws it away and there's no way you can say " reprocess that" or play it back as a sound. It's just gone. It's great.
So today, after going to Womba, I went and had an ice cream at La Michoacana. The one in the park with the lions was closed by a walk down to Zoccolo and had one there. I'd seen the railway museum on organic maps which isn't usually that reliable but you know and I thought what the hell I wander over there so I did and it was actually quite cool the little exhibition room was closed till three and I got there about half one and left about half two it was only a small exhibition I took some photos through the glass but I wandered around the little site and looked at the old railway still flying around and I wandered briefly through the slightly weird children's museum up the far end of the platform and it was actually quietly cool a nice little bit of touristing to be honest.
I then thought, just seeing on the map, I'd keep walking north up that road as far as Capella del Cilencio. I can't actually remember what it's called, which I did. It's absolutely nothing to see. It's right next to four? pillars that I think is a Ninos heroes statue. So I got there, snapped a pointless photo, and then I came back mostly down another street, (ninos heroes) as I think, back into town and then back here.
I think the plan for tonight, given there's no language exchange, is I'm going to have a shower near a sunset. Then I'll maybe go out and see if I can... There might be some music someplace at eight, according to some random website. It may or may not be any good. I'm not sure where it is. I might just go for a bit of a wander, you know, maybe have a meal after dark rather than eating something in the next hour or two. Maybe have a beer or two. If I find somewhere with live music or that looks nice to go to solo I will I'll probably hold off on booking the accommodation in Puerto Escondido until tomorrow morning. Although I will have a bit of a poke at the buses now and see if I can see where there's more than one terminal. I think there's at least one shuttle service as well as ADO and I don't want to go to the wrong place.
2106 Back in dorm, still just me here.
If I remember rightly, I went for a wander after a writing that previous note before it got dark. I think I had another ice cream at La michoacana. I went and had a look at that very popular torta, as it turned out, place just on independentes near Charlie's. It was deserted and I hung around wondering if I should risk ordering something just for the hell of it. And the guy came over and waved at me and goes like, we've got nothing. Maybe Spanish +gestures but I'm not sure.
Then I came back to the hostel, had a shower, washed two sets of clothes. That is two tops and two sets of underwear. Actually use soap for the washing of the clothes so wow.
Went out about 1830 ish, maybe a bit earlier actually. Anyway, I asked a reception about checkout, it's 12 and about buses to Puerto Escondido. The guy said there's lineas unidas, maybe 6 plus 3 blocks away. It is on om. I may do a quick web search to see if they have timetables failing that. I may just go over there and wing it tomorrow. fall back to ADO.
So I wandered round. It was kind of all right. I went to royalty restaurant in the end, but the menu was different. I'd been thinking I might have the arrachera a as an actual steak, which I think I'd seen this morning, but it wasn't there. So I checked the menu had changed since morning with Waiter and I left. I found, I think it was Chemita and that looked fairly down at heel, kind of, but eating taco place and I got five tacos. And that was quite nice. And I then wandered around a bit. I spotted like microbrewery type bar very small. I went in and I had a pint of about 7% black IPA. Very expensive at 100 plus tip, but I suppose it was nice and it was strong. Just me and this one of the probably Mexican guy sitting at the bar, very quiet, I was going to have another 473 millilitre quote, pint, unquote, but then the other guy left and I start to think maybe they were closing and then I thought, well, do I really want another and it's quite expensive so I left?
So I wandered round and I got a couple of bread snacks at that bakery I went to on the first morning, it was quite busy and I ate those wandering round and ended up in the Zoccolo and there were a lot of people milling around and outside some of the bars on there there were musicians and some people were dancing in the street and there were a lot of people just wandering around and listening and some people dancing and generally there were quite a lot of people on the street and I sat a bit and I listened and I Wondered some more and it was quite nice didn't feel threatening there were quite a lot of people about not that many opportunities to snack which was maybe not a bad thing but a little bit surprising I suppose it's only Wednesday I could have gone and had a drink at one of those bars or one of several other places but I'm on my own and I wasn't super in the mood not a problem so anyway I came back here I think I started sort of headed back about five to nine I was enjoying watching stuff and wandering around and being on the street and trying to experience the moment but I also felt I was in danger of milking it a bit.
If you can't guess, I'm using voice typing for this and trying to fix some of the most egregious errors afterwards. But that's why there's not much punctuation and the style is different. I'm not sober, but you know, I had that not a full pint 7% thing about two hours ago. So, you know, I'm not terribly drunk.
2117 on lower terrace for better WiFi and a maybe I'll advised but probably OK black coffee.
FWIW ado have not quite (it is irregular) one bus an hour here to Puerto Escondido at mxn355. I can't find anything for lineas unidas online except maybe on a "you must login first" Facebook page but (maybe without bag, not sure) may wander over there tomorrow morning to see and perhaps have something to eat before I leave here before checkout at 12. LU is minibuses and may or may not charge a premium.
Someone (possibly Ludo? Italian woman when leaving San Cris hostel) said the sunsets in PE are nice and that people applaud them for some reason.
Depending on the beaches and their shape and busyness and structure it may be possible for me to exercise in pe as well, which would be a semi-welcome change on top of being able to maybe swim.
FWIW the dorm here doesn't seem overly noisy from nearby bars but there is a noticeable to me amount of traffic noise in the morning when I'm in bed not terrible and vaguely urban comforting in a way, but some of very loud engine noises and horns are a bit in your face.
Nearly finished coffee. Teeth sticky from sweet snacks earlier. Will send this then go clean teeth and go to bed.
Didn't sleep great but not too bad. Probably woke up about seven-ish and drifted in and out of sleep. Probably got up about nine.
